Over the past several years, support for equality for the LGBTQ community has risen across the political spectrum. Historically and currently, Democrats have been more open to the LGBTQ community and supported a variety of their causes, including same-sex marriage, equality for all, transgender military service, and a ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
According to a recent poll conducted by Public Religion Research Institute, majorities of Americans in every religion, party, and U.S. state support nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals, especially among Democrats.
In March 2019, Congressional Democrats re-introduced the Equality Act, which would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the classes protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, modifying the existing civil rights legislation to ban discrimination against LGBTQ people in housing, employment, education, public accommodations, jury service, credit, and federal programs. If this bill becomes law, it will be the first national nondiscrimination law for LGBTQ Americans and a “win” for the Democrats and equality overall.
