Since 1920, when the rural urban population was about equal, the divide has gotten wider. Nowadays, rural voters are predominately older, white Christian Republicans who are less likely to have a college degree.
According to a recent Pew Research Center study, Rural Republicans are:
- more likely than Republicans in urban areas to say the legalization of same-sex marriage is a bad thing for society.
- more probable to express a very positive view of Donald Trump.
- far more likely to say that all or most of their neighbors are the same race or ethnicity as they are.
