ICMC was founded in 1951, in the wake of the massive human displacement caused by the Second World War.
In 1951, six years after the end of World War II, German, Italian, and American laity and clergy joined the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Archbishop Montini (the future Pope Paul VI), to create the ICMC to address the needs of European war refugees, the ICMC has been operating around the globe ever since providing aid and resettling those displaced by natural disaster, political strife or war.
The following year, Pope Pius XII, in his papal letter, Exsul Familia, focused the attention of Catholics on the needs of migrants and refugees, and formally introduced ICMC to the world.
Today, ICMC works to promote policies and practices that respect human dignity, human rights and the well-being of all uprooted people. Through its civil society networks, and by engaging with a variety of stakeholders, ICMC seeks to inspire change and improve the protection of all migrants.
Families and individuals who are forced to flee their homes due to conflicts, human rights violations, and natural disasters often struggle to meet their basic needs, suffer acute deprivations and are exposed to significant risks.
