EMTs and paramedics are trained in emergency medical procedures that need to be carried within a rapid time frame from onset of a patient's condition.  Their immediate focus is the fast evaluation of a patient's condition and maintaining a patient's airway, breathing and circulation.  Immediate interventions include providing CPR and cardiac defibrillation when necessary, controlling sever external bleeding, preventing shock, immobilization of the neck to prevent further spinal damage, immediate treatment (such as splinting) of bone fractures (both open and closed).  Interventions are design to prevent further injury or disability and preserve life or conditions conducive to life while they expedite transport of the patient to a hospital emergency department for definitive medical care.

In an emergency, EMTs and paramedics are typically dispatched by a 911 operator to the scene, where they often work with police and fire fighters.  EMTs and paramedics are most often employed by fire departments, police departments, hospitals, and private ambulance services.
