They administer anesthetics, closely monitor patients' vital signs during surgery and adjust anesthetics accordingly, monitor patients through the first recovery stages after an operation, and administer appropriate medications during recovery. Anesthetists assist in surgical procedures throughout the day. Before each procedure they review the patient’s chart and interview the patient. Then they draw up a plan for the best choice of anesthesia drug and method, based on the procedure and the patient’s medical history. Upon conclusion of the surgical procedure, the anesthetist may provide instructions and information to the patient's family about when to expect the patient to wake up and what side effects might be present.

Anesthesiologists practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered: traditional hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms; critical access hospitals; ambulatory surgical centers; the offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and pain management specialists; and U.S. military, Public Health Services, and Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities.
