Executive Directory of School Administration allows you to target the individuals that manage and operate public elementary and secondary schools (including middle schools and high schools). Most administrators are current or former educators who have decided not to work directly with students, so they turn to administrative positions in public educational institutions.

School administrators may be superintendents, who are responsible for entire school districts, or principals, who are responsible for individual schools. Superintendents are responsible for managing anywhere from two schools to eight hundred schools with the aid of their assistant superintendents. They are accountable for setting and administering policies on hiring, curriculum management (such as textbooks, reading programs, and district wide curriculum standards), discipline, as well as budgetary matters and teacher and staff development. Principals and assistant principals are just as important, but focus more on one individual school in a district. They are responsible for drawing up their school’s budgets and to see that the policies set by the superintendent on curriculum, teaching, and discipline are carried out. Principals are also responsible for the school’s physical maintenance. These administrators work together to run safe and efficient schools for a positive learning environment.

Many of these professionals hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in educational administration or educational leadership. Some have advanced degrees in subjects like counseling, curriculum development, academic policy development, school law, or finance depending on their specific job duties. In order for their schools to succeed they must be effective and educated leaders.
