School Nurses target individuals that want to work elementary, middle, high school, and college settings where they can observe and treat students. They are the main proponents of good health and safety for students in the schools that serve them.
School Nurses are mainly women. They are typically required to become a registered nurse to secure this position. They may also see additional work in education or psychology as well. Often this involves earning a bachelor of science degree in nursing and then passing a nurse licensing exam. They take care of the sick and injured both teachers and students. They may also have to take a school nurse certification exam. They may disperse prescription medication, treat wounds and give emotional support. A person in this position often has the job of handling student health care evaluations, perform basic screenings, and provide first aid. These individuals hold hearing, eye and dental screenings once a year for students, depending on grade level. School nurses coordinate health fairs and lectures for teachers and students.
These individuals can play a role as middleman between parents and doctors. School nurses keep their work area knowledgeable with posters, signs and décor for students to learn about. They order medical supplies like: Bandages, Cotton Swabs, Cotton Balls, Anti-bacterial Soaps, Thermometers, Ice Packs, Aspirin, Defibrillators, Medical Waste Cans, Medical furniture, Sanitation supplies, and Blood pressure monitors. |
