The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) was founded in 1963 to certify the credentials of practicing geologists and to advocate on behalf of the profession. AIPG represents the professional interests of all practicing geoscientists in every discipline.
AIPG members work in a variety of settings, including natural resource companies, environmental consulting companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and universities. Many members do field work at least part of the time. Others spend their time in laboratories, classrooms or offices.
The field often requires the mingling of scientific disciplines, so many AIPG members utilize chemistry, mathematics, physics, geography, engineering, hydrology, environmental studies, urban planning, paleontology, biology, and mineralogy. This makes them excellent prospects for a wide variety of offers.
