Founded in 1907, the American Land Title Association (ALTA) is the largest organization exclusively dedicated to serving title insurance agents, abstracters (person who prepares a summary of public records relating the title for a specific parcel of land), underwriters, lawyers and others involved in the land title industry. Specializing in real property law, ALTA members search, review, and insure land titles to protect home buyers and mortgage lenders who invest in real estate.
ALTA members are entrepreneurs, business owners, or business managers who advocate safe and efficient transfer of real estate and insist on high standards when searching land title records and preparing insurance documents. For a one-time cost at the real estate closing, title insurance will pay valid claims, and will pay for defending against an attack on the title as insured.
In addition to legislative and regulatory issues, ALTA’s other primary functions include title-industry specific education; liaison with appropriate national organizations; working to improve land title records; monitoring legislative and regulatory developments; automation information and research.
