NPs make prevention, wellness, and patient education priorities. In addition to health care services, NPs conduct research and are often active in patient advocacy activities.

Nurse Practitioners treat both physical and mental conditions through comprehensive history taking, physical exams, ordering, and interpreting diagnostic tests. NPs can diagnose a disease and then provide appropriate treatment for the patients, including prescribing medications. NPs can serve as a patient's primary health care provider, and see patients of all ages depending on their specialty.

Nurse Practitioners may hold national board certification in an area of specialty such as family, women's health, pediatrics, adult, acute care, amongst others, and are licensed through the state nursing boards. Nurse Practitioners perform a variety of duties including diagnosing, treating, evaluating, and managing acute and chronic illness, coordinating referrals, obtaining medical histories and conducting physical exams, ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic studies, prescribe physical therapy, prescribe medications, provide prenatal care and family planning services, counseling and educating patients on health behaviors, self-care skills, and treatment options.

Nurse Practitioners (NP’s) can work in a variety of settings. These include community clinics, health centers, urgent care centers, health maintenance organizations, home health care agencies, hospitals, hospital clinics, nurse practitioner offices, nursing homes, schools, private medical practices, veteran’s administration facilities, public health departments, or walk-in clinics.

Nursing professionals are responsible for taking and recording a patient’s vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature) and symptoms. They know how to start an IV, dispense medications, communicate effectively with doctors and other nurses, follow privacy laws and support a patient and families while patients are under their care. The specific nursing responsibilities vary with the job setting they work in.
