Founded in 1984, the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) represents an exclusive niche of social workers serving as primary providers of psychosocial services to people affected by cancer. AOSW members provide a wide range of services directly to persons with cancer and their families including counseling, support, education, and resource identification. Members work within hospitals, outpatient clinics, home care and hospice agencies, community wellness programs, and patient advocacy organizations.
AOSW and its members are dedicated to increasing awareness about the social, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of cancer patients through conferences, research, writing, workshops, and lectures. AOSW publications include the Journal of Psychosocial Oncology, which is the very first professional journal in the field, as well as a quarterly Newsletter, the Oncology Social Work Toolbox, and many position papers.
