A Psychologist holds either a PhD or Psy.D in clinical, counseling, industrial, or school psychology and has also met state or
provincial licensing criteria. Licensing includes the advanced degree, in-field training under an established practitioner, an initial
examination and on-going continuing education. In most states, psychologists are the only people authorized to perform psychotherapy;
since they are not medical doctors they cannot write prescriptions for medications.
